As requested, this is the second part of my earlier flash piece ‘A regular coffee, regularly. You can read it, if you haven’t already. Even if you don’t, you can enjoy this one; it stands on its own.

“Here’s your cappuccino, Maria, with extra cream; just as you like it. All the muffins and cookies got sold today, so no leftovers tonight. I can get you a burger if you like or a sandwich or…”

“Lizzy, calm down. How many times do I have to remind you that I am not your responsibility, you already do so much for me. Besides, I am a big girl, I can take care of myself.”

“I know you can. I just want to help.”

“Yeah, yeah… I know all about your ‘at least one good deed per day policy’ but I am sure you overcompensate.”… “ So, how was the day? Met anyone interesting?”

“Same old, nothing out of the ordinary”… “Don’t look at me like that, I know exactly what you want to know and before you say anything- yes, he came and nothing more happened.”

“Hey, I didn’t say anything.”… “So how long it has been?”

“I don’t know, seems like forever. He comes in every morning, orders a black coffee with a cheese omelette, never drinks the coffee though and…”

“Try giving him a cappuccino or a latte”… “And?”

“We talk. Well, I mean, I listen and he talks. The way he looks at me with those deep blue piercing eyes, I can’t describe it, it’s so… intense, like I am the only thing that matters to him. He tells me things…”

“What kind of things?”

“Details of his past, experiences; some are intense and disturbing while others are routine life, few even are happy and cheerful like sunshine. You should see him smile, it is so beautiful, the kind which can make you smile. I know so much about him, it feels like I have known him for ages. All of this is so unusual that sometimes I get scared. What do you think?”

“I think whatever happens in our lives is a part of a much bigger picture that we as mere humans are unable to see. With time, things become a little clearer and most of the things happen for a good reason, even though we might not be able to see it that way. But if he makes you uncomfortable in the slightest you should ask him to stop. He seems like a man who will understand.”

“NO! You get me wrong, it’s not like that. I feel very safe around him and special. I know I can trust him. The unusuality of this all, I think, has me over-thinking. I mean, what all of this really means, what are we- friends?…”

“You know that’s the problem with us humans, we try to name and categorize every relation we have and only once it is organised and named we take time to celebrate it. We forget that relations are not things which need to be categorized and stored, they are much beyond the boxes which we keep them in. There is beauty in unorganized, scattered emotions like colorful confetti. We should learn to enjoy that; sometimes, by asking the names we diminish the value our relations holds.”

“You are probably right, I am over-thinking again. I will let time answer this one.”… “Oh my God, Maria! I didn’t pay attention earlier, this jacket fits you perfectly, better than my Mom actually; it was always slightly bigger for her.”

“I know right, I was waiting when you’d notice.”… “You should go, it is getting late. I will go to the Lexi’s Soup Kitchen tonight, they make a killer chicken-noodle soup on Thursdays.”

“The storeroom in the back isn’t locked, you can sleep in there; just don’t let Mrs Wilson see you, or else I’ll be in trouble.”… “See you tomorrow, Maria”, Lizzy said before speeding away in a taxi.

Don’t shy away, I would love to know your thoughts! Cheers 🙂 .
