*New piece*—The Second Wife—
Sania’s life, like most others, was steeped in traditions; some of which were picked up from the society which she lived in, others from her culture and heritage, many others from her family and the religion that she followed and very few which she chose for herself.
These threads of various colors when entwined gave her the fabric of her life which she tailored to the best of her abilities and opportunities.
The opportunities for a girl of a lower-class Muslim family in a third world country were extremely limited; but unfortunately for her, her abilities were not.
She was given the dreams and the wings to nurture them but not the skies to explore.
She never went to any school and by the time she turned fifteen she was married off. She was the second wife of a school master.
Years have passed and now, she has a daughter of her own. She is eight and each passing day weighs heavily on Sania. She doesn’t wants to think about the silent tick-tock of the clock which diminishes the schooling days of her daughter with each passing second. She wants to give her the vast expanse of the skies which wasn’t offered to her.
When she sees her daughter tearing away newspaper covers, hurriedly from her new course books bundle, she winces every time. She wants her daughter to cherish these moments, engrave them to her memory because every time she un-wraps a book, sadly it could be her last.
She wants her to be more than just a second wife to a man double her age.
Please, bear with all the mistakes (grammatical/typos), if any, I did the best I could. Looking forward to hear your thoughts.
